Discover Smoky Lapsang Souchong - Our February Tea of the Month
Tea of the month isn’t a club or subscription, but a way for you to discover the versatiliTEA (sorry) of a single tea, and some fun facts too. Plus, each tea will be 15% off for the duration of the month!
That being said, I’d like to introduce you to our inaugural Tea of the Month: Smoky Lapsang Souchong! This Chinese black tea is grown in the Wuyi Mountains, and is smoked using the leaves and wood of the pine tree, giving the tea its signature smokey, piney aroma. It’s perfectly warm, and a great tea for the ice cold month of February.
It is said that during the Qing Dynasty, drying leaves had to be moved to accomodate soldiers occupying the area. Workers then sped up the drying by placing the leaves over pinewood fire, thus creating its distinct smoky flavour and aroma.
A fun fact about this particular tea in the shop is that there aren’t any tea fields designated to the families around the mountains - they are wild grown and end up in the yards and fields of the tea pickers’ properties. Those leaves will be picked and sent to a family-run factory in Wuyishan for processing. Smoky Lapsang Souchong is processed like most orthodox black teas, but while the tea leaves are withering, they’re put in a smoky chamber fuelled by pinewood, pine needles, and rosin.
